In the beginning ………………….

In 1985 LOMVC visited Haltern in Germany after being invited by their local choir and we were made very welcome .Indeed, everywhere we went the German choir paid and wouldn’t let us contribute a pfennig. Whilst we were there we were taken to visit the waterworks and the power station, entertained at a social evening and generally made royally welcome.

On our coach journey home some ladies and partners were discussing the visit and a return visit was mentioned. How on earth could we repay their hospitality? We decided that we would have to raise some cash towards this event. So we began to hold coffee mornings and jumble sales. Eventually the German choir visited and we were able to return their hospitality with a visit to London and a social evening.

Soon a group of ladies began to meet up every so often to plan these events and to progress to an Olde Tyme Music Hall. At this time we had two ladies who welcomed us into their homes and gardens and we were able to hold very successful summer fetes and Christmas sales in these venues.

Eventually, I took over, invited friends to form a committee, opened a bank account and we were off! Now we were on a more formal footing.

Over the years we have raised thousands of pounds for the choir to augment their fees. We have purchased things like new uniforms, music, microphone and en electric piano and have subsidized trips abroad and paid towards the purchase of the staging.

Even more than this we have created a social aspect for the choir. Choir practices, being what they are, don’t give people time to chat and to get to know one another. So we provide the situations where this can happen and also raise much needed funds for the choir too.

I hope that the Leigh Orpheus Ladies continue to entertain you and raise funds for many years to come.

Moving on…………………

Leigh Orpheus Ladies have been in existence for over twenty years but we now have a “new kid on the block”.

Several times my ladies have been asked to proved refreshments at various concerts. This has sometimes proved difficult as some of my members are also members of the front of house team. So I decided to get together a team of six ladies who have always been willing to help whenever I have asked them…often at short notice!

This group will still be run under the auspices of the Leigh Orpheus Ladies but, in future, you will see these ladies providing a very necessary cuppa!

This group is run by Rhona Cole and consist of Evelyn Cameron, Joyce Hall, Thelma Taylor, Joan Lamont and Dot Smith.
